Five Shifts in Urban Heat Risk Assessment: From Static Maps to Dynamic Action Strategies
Traditional urban heat risk assessment methods can no longer cope with increasingly complex heat risks. Based on a recent Nature comment article, this paper proposes five key shifts to move cities from static vulnerability maps toward dynamic, context-sensitive assessment and action frameworks.
The frequent occurrence of extreme heat and the failure of traditional assessment methods have prompted the academic community to call for change. This paper reviews five shifts: from static maps to dynamic exposure, from engineering technology to hybrid adaptation, from population labels to dynamic sensitivity, from isolated disasters to compound extreme events, and integrates them into a decision support framework to provide more targeted and equitable heat risk preparation strategies for cities worldwide.
