Deep Reshaping of the Global Urban System

From a broader perspective, demographic differentiation is redrawing the global map of urban competitiveness. Those cities that can attract young immigrants, maintain a gender balance, and efficiently integrate new residents will gain an advantage in the innovation economy. Conversely, cities trapped in aging and lacking immigrant inflows, even with a large current economic aggregate, may encounter growth bottlenecks in the future.

Notably, cities in the Global South are not uniformly young. Some Latin American and Asian cities, after completing the demographic transition rapidly, face the imminent challenge of "growing old before growing rich." This reminds international development agencies: urban aid cannot only focus on poverty and housing; it also needs to precisely support the social security system required for demographic transformation.

The study in Nature Cities opens a new frontier for urban science. It demonstrates that in the urban competition of the 21st century, those who grasp a structured demographic profile of cities are more likely to formulate sustainable long-term strategies. Cities are no longer vague statistical units but are composite ecosystems composed of real people—of different ages, genders, and faces.
